A higher grade sounds like a better driveway, so most people ordering concrete for the first time reach for the strongest mix their budget allows. The assumption is that strength and longevity amount to the same thing, but they do not.

A family car places a modest load on a slab. What a driveway really faces is water, overnight frost, and de-icing salt, every winter, without a break. Strength deals with the weight and offers no protection against the weather, which is why C30 concrete, supplied across the UK as PAV1 or ST3, is the right concrete mix for almost every domestic driveway in Britain.

Why Does Air Entrainment Matter More Than Strength?

Air entrainment is an additive that introduces microscopic bubbles throughout the concrete during mixing. Three mechanisms explain why those bubbles protect a driveway better than any increase in grade.

Water, Frost and the Freeze-Thaw Cycle

Concrete is porous, and rainwater works its way into the surface, whether or not you can see it happening. When temperatures drop overnight, that trapped water freezes and expands, pushing outward against the concrete surrounding it.

Air-entrained concrete gives the expanding ice somewhere to go. The bubbles act as relief chambers, absorbing the pressure that would otherwise crack the surface from the inside.
